Biotechnology

Overview

The Department of Biotechnology was established in 2006 and offers undergraduate program in B.E., postgraduate (M.Sc. Engineering by Research) and Doctoral (Ph.D.) under the Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), Karnataka. The Department is recognized as a Research Centre in the year 2011. The Department is committed to produce competent and ethically responsible biotechnology professionals. Academic and research activities in the Department includes Bioinformatics, Molecular Biology, Fermentation Technology, Nanobiotechnology, Systems Biology, and Big Data Analytics. These thrust areas are supported by a team of six well-qualified and experienced faculty members whose expertise includes OMICS technologies, Biomolecular Simulations and Dynamics, Bioprocess Engineering, Nanomedicine, Applied Microbial Biotechnology, and Biopolymer Technology.

The Department has received financial support from KBITs, Government of Karnataka, and other funding organizations for infrastructure development, and academic initiatives. The Department has successfully offered one-year Postgraduate Diploma in Bioinformatics and Big Data Analytics, supported by KBITs and the Government of Karnataka in the past. The Department has also executed several sponsored research projects by funding organizations such as KBITs, VGST, DBT, DST, SERB, and VTU. Department actively promotes Research and Innovations through industry collaboration and internships through MOUs and related activities.

UG B.E. in Biotechnology for duration of 4 years. The intake is 30 students

M.Sc. Engineering in Research A 3 year course with an intake according to VTU norms

Ph.D – Intake through VTU enrolment

The Department of Biotechnology has proactively aligned its curriculum with the principles of the National Education Policy 2020. The curriculum emphasizes multidisciplinary learning and skill-based education. Curriculum integrates emerging areas such as Bio Data Analytics, Life Sciences-driven translational biology, and data-driven biotechnology. The Department also encourages experiential learning through projects, internships, research exposure, and innovation-driven activities, ensuring students develop critical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and industry-relevant skills in accordance with NEP objectives.

Program Description
B.E. in Biotechnology – UG Program A comprehensive 4-year program covering Genetic Engineering, Bioprocess Technology, OMICS, Cell and Molecular Biology, Bioinformatics, Pre-clinical Research, Bio-regulatory Affairs, and Bioethics, preparing students for diverse industries.
M.S. Engineering (Research) A research-focused postgraduate program designed to develop advanced analytical and innovation skills.
Ph.D. Research opportunities in OMICS Technologies, Biomolecular Simulations and Dynamics, Bioprocess Engineering, Nanomedicine, Applied Microbial Biotechnology, and Biopolymer Technology.

Syllabus

Program Educational Objectives (PEOs)

Graduates from Biotechnology will achieve the following Program Educational Objectives within few years of graduation:

  1. The graduates of the program are practicing engineering profession in IT sectors (IT system engineers, data analyst and computer programmer), and BT sectors (clinical data coordinator, clinical research associate, Quality controller and Quality assurance analyst, Molecular biologist and Business development executive)

  2. The graduates of the program are engaged in higher studies leading to professional degree in specific domain such as biological sciences, computational biology and also engaged in life-long learning.

  3. The graduates of the program practice profession with high ethical and moral values and have developed good communication skills and leadership qualities while working as a member of the team or as a team leader.

Program Outcomes (POs)

Graduates will be able to:

  1. Engineering Knowledge: Apply knowledge of mathematics, natural science, computing, engineering fundamentals and an engineering specialization respectively to develop to the solution of complex engineering problems. 

  2. Problem Analysis: Identify, formulate, review research literature and analyze complex engineering problems reaching substantiated conclusions with consideration for sustainable development.

  3. Design/Development of Solutions: Design creative solutions for complex engineering problems and design/develop systems/components/processes to meet identified needs with consideration for the public health and safety, whole-life cost, net zero carbon, culture, society and environment as required.

  4. Conduct Investigations of Complex Problems: Conduct investigations of complex engineering problems using research-based knowledge including design of experiments, modelling, analysis & interpretation of data to provide valid conclusions.

  5. Engineering Tool Usage: Create, select and apply appropriate techniques, resources and modern engineering & IT tools, including prediction and modelling recognizing their limitations to solve complex engineering problems.

  6. The Engineer and The World: Analyze and evaluate societal and environmental aspects while solving complex engineering problems for its impact on sustainability with reference to economy, health, safety, legal framework, culture and environment.

  7. Ethics: Apply ethical principles and commit to professional ethics, human values, diversity and inclusion; adhere to national & international laws

  8. Individual and Collaborative Team work: Function effectively as an individual, and as a member or leader in diverse/multi-disciplinary teams.

  9. Communication: Communicate effectively and inclusively within the engineering community and society at large, such as being able to comprehend and write effective reports and design documentation, make effective presentations considering cultural, language, and learning differences.

  10. Project Management and Finance: Apply knowledge and understanding of engineering management principles and economic decision-making and apply these to one’s own work, as a member and leader in a team, and to manage projects and in multidisciplinary environments.

  11. Life-Long Learning: Recognize the need for and have the preparation and ability for i) independent and life-long learning ii) adaptability to new and emerging technologies and iii) critical thinking in the broadest context of technological change

  • PSO1: To conduct the Upstream and Downstream experiments to produce, optimize, separate, purify and characterize biological compounds.
