The department was established in 1974. The UG, PG and research programmes are conducted with the help of well-qualified and experienced faculty. Out of 14 faculty members 5 have Ph.D. degrees and the remaining are working towards their doctoral degrees.
The undergraduate course is popular, attracting students from all over the country and Nepal. Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers' (IIChE) student chapter is functioning well and many events are organized under the aegis of the said chapter every year.
The UG programme was accredited one time in the past by AICTE-NBA for 5 years and recently for two years [2014 to 2016]. 80% of our graduating students are placed in industry and the remaining 20% pursue higher studies in India and abroad. The department has a strong alumni base who are actively involved in skill development activities.
Research: The department has core strength in the areas of
  • Treating wastewater and freshwater by chemical and biochemical methods.
  • Micro/Nano-materials and thin films for energy and environmental applications.
  • Biodiesel production by algae.
  • Drug delivery.
  • Conversion of waste plastic to fuels.
  • Conversion of waste to useful products.
The faculty have sponsored projects in ocular therapeutics and drug delivery. The faculty members are actively involved in research and this has resulted in a good number of publications and patent applications. The faculty research areas also include nanomaterials, zeolites, defluoridation, Parthenium-based products and heavy metal removal from wastewater.
We have excellent laboratories equipped with sophisticated analytical instruments such as ion meter for fluoride analysis, HPLC, UV-Vis spectrophotometer, photobioreactor, subcritical extraction unit, atomic absorption spectrometer and spray dryer for research studies.We have UNISIM, DESIGN-II and COMSOL software tools for research.
Industry-Institute Interaction: Students of third year are encouraged to pursue industry internships during summer vacation in different industries and R&D centers across the country. Guest lectures by personnel from industry and reputed institutions are regularly organized during the academic session.

  • Attain the target of 90% faculty members acquiring Ph.D. degree by 2021..
  • Starting consultancy services.
  • Establish an advanced centre for research in drug delivery and nanomaterials.
  • Strengthen alumni interaction and involvement.
  • Strengthen industry - institute interaction.
  • To increase sponsored research project funds from the present Rs. 50 lakhs to Rs. 100 lakhs by 2021.

Programme educational objectives (PEOs) and course objectives
The department of Chemical Engineering at Siddaganga Institute of Technology, Tumakuru has defined the following Programme Educational Objectives of importing knowledge and skills in the state of the art technologies in areas of Process Engineering, Transport Operations, Biochemical Engineering and Environmental Engineering, thus empowering graduates to emerge as competent professionals to meet the global challenges.
The graduates of Chemical Engineering Programme are able to:
  • Acquire required knowledge and competence in mathematics, sciences and chemical engineering in the fields of (a) kinetics (b) process control (c) process modeling and computational techniques (d) novel separation techniques (e) transfer operations (f) biochemical chemical engineering (g) process integration.
  • Produce proficient chemical engineers with long term learning ability to reduce the impacts of technological obsolescnince.
  • Comprehend, analyze, design and implement chemical engineering principles for real world problems.
  • Inculcate in students the ethical and spiritual values, team work and leadership qualities in order to provide engineering solutions for social and economical problems.

Heat and Mass Transfer laboratories.
