The Department was started in the year 2006 with Under Graduate Program B.E. in Biotechnology Engineering, with an uptake of 30. The department has recognized as a Research centre in the year 2011 for the students who would like to pursue their higher studies. Department also offers one year postgraduate Diploma in Bioinformatics and Rational Drug Design (Supported by Karnataka Biotechnology and Information Technology Services (KBITs), Government of Karnataka and Department of Biotechnology, Government of India).
Department imparts training for students to make them competent, motivated engineers and scientists. The department has well qualified faculty members from varied background in Biotechnology domain. Department has established the state-of-art Bioinformatics facility, Fermentation Technology (supported by KBITs) and Nanobiotechnology (collaboration with Chemical Engineering Department). Under autonomous scheme, the department has developed the Mission, Vision, Programme Educational Objectives (PEOs) and (POs) as follows:
Mission
The Department is committed to develop proficient professionals by offering necessitate based curriculum in Biotechnology Engineering areas like plant-, animal-, microbial-, environmental-, nano- biotechnology and computational biology, promoting research and innovation, centre of excellence and to train the students for higher study, life-long learning and societal responsibility. The department is also committed to provide work-ready biotech engineers and entrepreneurs, excellent learning environment to inculcate professional ethics and skills in our students and to provide engineering services to the society.

To provide self-reliant skilled manpower required to meet the challenges in large scale application of biotechnology, research and development in the areas of environment, healthcare and industry for socio-economic improvement.

The Department has signed MoU with various leading industries and academics for the active involvement of industry experts and researchers in framing industry relevant syllabus, students for training and placement. Because of a close collaboration of the Department with the leading industries, our students are placed in leading core Biotechnology companies. Some of the Biotech organizations where our alumnus are working includes Biocon, Genotypic Technology, Accenture, Dr. Reddy's Laboratories Limited, Bionivid Technology, Polyclone Bioservices, Reliance Life Sciences, Mumbai and Quintiles Research India Pvt Ltd. Our faculties encourage, motivate and guide students to take up the higher education and research. Currently our alumni are pursuing their higher studies in Max Planck Institute, Germany, NYU Tandon School of Engineering, George Mason University, United States, The University of Auckland, New Zealand, Institute of Biomedical Sciences, Academia Sinica, Indian Institute of Guwahati (IITG), Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, Institute of Bioinformatics, Bangalore, Amrita University, Kerala, National Institute of Technology, Suratkal, Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology, Bhopal, and National Institute of Technology, Trichy,etc. In addition, our students are placed in reputed companies like Tata Consultancy Services, Wipro, Mu Sigma, Mind Tree and Accenture.
About the Biotechnology Finishing School (BTFS):  A PG Diploma in Bioinformatics and Rational Drug Design under the auspices of B.T. Finishing School has been started from the academic year 2011-12 in the department of Biotechnology of S.I.T., Tumkur. The Government of Karnataka has initiated this novel B.T. Finishing School concept to impart industry specific skills to graduate and post graduate students of Biotechnology to make them industry ready. The Government has sanctioned Rs.1.00 crore grants to our institute for establishing the facility and to run the Biotechnology Finishing School. The Bioinformatics facility in the Department is well established with the high-end computers required for analyzing the high throughput data, gold standard licensed software and internet facility.
The department has established the necessary facilities for training students to meet the industry requirements in Bioinformatics and Fermentation Technology. Currently the BTFS focuses on training students in various aspects of Bioinformatics including essentials of bioinformatics, microarray data analysis, transncriptome data analysis, proteomics, virtual screening and rational drug design.
The Bioinformatics facility supported by the KBITs is available to all students of SIT, researchers within the institute and external institutes also. The researchers, faculty members and students of various colleges and universities all over India have been using our Bioinformatics facility since 2012 and published papers in the international reputed journals.
The department of Biotechnology is providing the Hands on training to the Biocon Academy School, Bangalore students in Fermenter 20 lit and Preparative HPLC since three years successfully.

Introduction
A new program initiated by Govt. of Karnataka (KBITS) which is of one year duration has been started from the academic year 2011-12. SIT is one among ten colleges selected to start BT Finishing School. The course is of two semesters wherein first semester will be of classroom teaching and the next will emphasize on Industry Training. The institution has established MOUs with six reputed biotech industries/ companies which have offered to help in improving industry-institution collaboration through offering good projects to students assist them for getting placements. Representatives from these industries will be invited to participate and help design competitive syllabi.

Eligibility
Candidates must have a minimum of 50% in Masters degree from Universities of the state or any other University recognized as equivalent in Life Sciences, Biotechnology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Bioinformatics or any other life science related courses; B.E./B.Tech. Biotechnology, Bioinformatics; Bachelor of Pharmacy, Agriculture, Veterinary, MBBS and BDS are also eligible to apply.
